CBSE 12th Exam Pattern 2021 – There are few major changes expected in the CBSE 12th exam pattern here. Earlier this year, Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has released the news sample papers for CBSE board exams and in it, the new exam pattern was also given. However, as per reports, major changes are expected in the exam pattern of CBSE 12th exams 2021. CBSE 12th Exam Pattern 2021
For class 12th board exams, CBSE has introduced new changes in its curriculum. The changes done are as follows –
Introduction of 25% Objective Type Questions
25% of objective type questions have been introduced in the class 12th curriculum for all subjects. The type of objective type questions may include the following – MCQs, Fill in the Blanks, Assertion-Reason, etc. With this, the students can easily score good marks and will lessen the burden of the students of writing lengthy answers. Moreover, this will allow the students to dedicate their time for writing theory part.
What are objective type questions: These are those questions which have multiple answer option and one of it is correct. This type of questions are asked in JEE Main , NEET, and other entrance exams.
CBSE 12th Exams will be Held Twice a Year?
This is just as per the newspaper but as per the reports, the exam might be held twice a year. CBSE has proposed 3-4 ways to conduct the exams and one of it is to conduct the exam twice, whenever it is possible in a place. Also, students will be given one more chance to take the exam, if they are not able to attend test because of the COVID.
Another of the proposed method is to hold the exam in respective school and only for 4 subject paper. None of this has been confirmed for now. The final decision out today, in the meeting.
33% Internal Choices in CBSE 12th Board Exams
More number of internal choices have been added for 2021 board exams. In line with this, students now have enough choices which will further help them fetch good marks in the examination.
New exam pattern – Internal assessment
CBSE generally does not have an internal assessment, however, as per the new exam pattern released, all subjects of CBE class 12 will carry 20% weightage is given for the internal assessment. For example in the Science group, the major subjects include – Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, and other compulsory subjects include English and the Second language as per choice. With this, now 20% weightage is given to internal exams, and 80% weightage is given to the finals.

CBSE class 12th board exams are of a total duration of 3 hours and comprises 26 questions. The question paper is generally divided into – Very short answer questions (1 mark each), Short answer type questions-I (2 marks each), Short answer type questions-II (3 marks each), Value-based question (4 marks), and Long answer type questions (5 marks each). The exam pattern of CBSE class 12th for each subject is as follows:
CBSE 12th Exam Pattern 2021 for Maths
The question paper is divided into two parts – A and B. Part A has Objective Type Questions which carries 24 marks and Part B has Descriptive Type Questions which carries 56 marks. Students have choice in both Part A and B. Chek the complete exam pattern below.
Part A:
- Consists of two sections – I and II.
- Section I comprises 16 very short answer type questions (VSAs).
- Section II will contain 2 case studies and each case study comprises 5 case-based MCQs. You can attempt any 4 out of 5 MCQs.
Part – B:
- Part B is divided into three sections- III, IV, and V.
- Section III consists of 10 questions of 2 marks each.
- Section IV comprises 7 questions of 3 marks each.
- Section V comprises 3 questions of 5 marks each.
- Examinees will get an internal choice in 3 questions of Section-III, 2 questions of Section-IV, and 3 sections of Section-V.
CBSE 12th Exam Pattern 2021 for Biology
The class 12th Biology question paper has four sections: Section A, Section B, Section C, and Section D. In total, there are 33 questions in the question paper. Students can check the complete exam pattern below.
- Section–A comprises 14 questions of 1 mark each and 02 case-based questions.
- Section–B comprises 9 questions of 2 marks each.
- Section–C consists of 5 questions of 3 marks each
- Section–D will have 3 questions of 5 marks each.
CBSE 12th Exam Pattern 2021 for Physics
There are a total 33 questions in all and the paper is divided into five sections – Section A, Section B, Section C, Section D and Section E.
- Section A contains 10 very short answer questions and 04 assertion reasoning MCQs of 1 mark each.
- Section B comprises 02 case-based questions of 4 marks each.
- Section C contains 09 short answer questions of 2 marks each.
- Section D contains 05 short answer questions of 3 marks each.
- Section E contains 03 long answer questions of 5 marks each.
CBSE 12th Exam Pattern 2021 for Chemistry
There are 33 questions in this question paper and is divided into 4 sections.
- Section A: There are objective-type questions out of which Q1 and Q2 are passage-based questions carrying 4 marks each whereas Q3 to Q16 carry 1 mark each.
- Section B: From Q17 to Q25, there are short answer questions and carry 2 marks each.
- Section C: From Q26 to Q30 are short answer questions and carry 3 marks each.
- Section D: Last are long answer questions carrying 5 marks each.
CBSE 12th Exam Pattern 2021 for Business Studies
CBSE Class 12 Business Studies board exam is of maximum 80 marks and the duration for the exam is 3 hours. The question paper contains 34 questions and students must answer the questions brief and to the point. For questions carrying 3 marks, the word limit is 50 to 75 words. For questions carrying 4 marks, you need to answer in about 150 words. Lastly, for questions carrying 6 marks, the word limit is about 200 words.
CBSE 12th Exam Pattern 2021 for Geography
This question paper is divided into 3 Sections – A, B and C. The exam is of total 70 marks and the duration of the exam is 3 hours.
- Section A – It is from question numbers 1 to 15 and comprises Objective type Multiple choice questions carrying 1 mark each. Students need to answer any 14 questions.
- Section B – It consists of Short Source Based and Graph Based questions respectively (from question number 16 to 17). These questions carry 3 marks each and students need to attempt any three questions out of 4. Each of the sub-questions carry 1 mark each.
- Section C – It consists of short answer and long answer type questions. The short-answer questions carry 3 marks each and the word limit is 60-80 words. Whereas, the long answer type questions carry 5 marks each and the answer to these questions should not exceed 120-150 words.
The last two questions, i.e., question number 28 and 29 are questions related to maps carrying 5 marks each.
CBSE 12th Exam Pattern 2021 for Economics
The maximum marks for Economics paper is 80 and the question paper is divided into two parts- Part A – Macro Economics (40 marks), and Part B – Indian Economic Development (40 marks).
- Question numbers 1-10 and 18 – 27 (including case-based questions) carry 1 marks each and should be answered in one word / sentence.
- Question numbers from 11-12, and 28 – 29 are 3 marks each and the answers should not exceed 60 – 80 words.
- Question numbers 13-15 and 30 – 32 are 4 marks and are to be answered in 80-100 words each.
- Question No. 16-17 and 33 – 34 are 6 marks questions for which the word limit is 100-150 words each.
CBSE 12th Exam Pattern 2021 for History
The maximum marks in the History paper is 80 and the question paper is divided into six sections.
- Section A: Comprises objective type questions carrying 1 mark.
- Section B: Consists of Case Based/ Source Based questions having Multiple Choices. Each question has 4 sub-parts and students can attempt any three sub-parts from each question.
- Section C: Each question carries 3 marks each and should not exceed 100 words each.
- Section D: Each question carries 8 marks ( Question 24 to 26) and should not exceed 350 words each.
- Section E: There are Source-based questions carrying 5 marks each
- Section F: It has a Map question that includes the identification and location of significant test items.
